Day 1: Puerto Montt / Llanada Grande

We drive through downtown Puerto Montt, gateway to the Chilean Patagonia, to Mile 0 of the “Carretera Austral”, Chile’s equivalent of the Alaska Highway. The route takes us south along Reloncaví Sound passing through picturesque fishing villages en route to La Arena Cove. Here a ferry carries us across the Fjord of Reloncaví into northern Patagonia proper. Approaching the Andes, we enter the steep-walled valley of the Puelo River that originates in Argentina. Heading upstream, we reach Lake Tagua Tagua, which we cross in yet another ferry. From here we follow a new road built to provide access to pioneer settlements in this isolated region. We visit Llanada Grande Falls which cascade down a vertical rockface from an impressive height. We also take time to paddle a canoe on Lake Totoral. A comfortable lodge awaits us, along with a hearty Patagonian meal.

Day 2: Llanada Grande

After breakfast we have the choice of a walk to Valley of the Huemules, carrying our lunch, or a horseback ride through the Puelo River valley enjoying beautiful landscapes in the heart of the Andes. There will be a chance to observe a variety of birds such as Condors, Eagles, the Chucao Tapaculo, and the Ringed Kingfisher. We return to the lodge where after a restoring sauna we enjoy a delicious supper and then drift off to sleep…

Day 3: Llanada Grande/ El Bolsón

We depart from the lodge to Lago Azul. After walking approximately 45 minutes we arrive at this wonderful lake, where a boat awaits us to take us on our first sail through its intensely blue waters. On disembarking on the opposite shore we walk some 50 minutes to Lago Las Rocas. Here we embark again to sail this wonderful lake. A half-hour’s sail brings us to the Lago Inferior area where Chilean border police check our travel documents. We have lunch on the shore of this beautiful lake before our final sail towards the Argentine border. Lake Inferior connects with Lake Puelo through a short stretch of river. Once there we go through Argentine border control, then sail on to the pier on Lake Puelo. From here we travel 20 kilometers to El Bolson, where we settle into our accommodations and enjoy a good supper.

Day 4: El Bolsón

Free time after breakfast to visit the village of El Bolson. After lunch we choose between  trekking towards the River Azul Valley, horseback riding, rafting on the River Azul, or agro-tourism. Supper and lodging.

Day 5: El Bolsón/ Bariloche

Breakfast and transfer to the city of Bariloche. En route we visit the base of Mount Tronador and Los Alerces Falls. Our route departs from El Bolson on route 258, bordering Lake Guillermo, then crossing the Pilmaiquen River and the Melgarejo Brook. Further on we follow the shores of Lake Mascardi until reaching route 254 and the road to Mount Tronador. This route crosses the bridge over the upper Manso River and continues to Pampa Linda. Nearing the end of the road, we pass through a shady forest and arrive at the Rio Manso Glacier, commonly called Ventisquero Negro. The route ends at the foot of Mount Tronador. Its three identifying peaks are: the Argentine at 3,554 m, the International at 3,554 m, and the Chilean at 3,410 m.
Los Alerces Falls constitutes a variation on this route. Instead of crossing the bridge over the Manso River, we continue on the road bordering Lake Los Moscos and the Manso River until arriving at the Hess River. The road ends after crossing the Roca River at Los Alerces Falls. A short 300 m walk brings us to an impressive viewpoint of these imposing falls.
The return trip follows the shoreline of Lake Mascardi, then crosses the Pilmaiquen River and the Melgarejo Brook. Further on we follow the shoreline of Lake Gutierrez, finally arriving at Bariloche where lodging and supper await us.

(It is also possible to arrive early at the Bariloche airport to connect to a flight to Buenos Aires).

SELF-GUIDED FISHING PROGRAM AT PUELO ALTO RIVER

The idea of this program is to create a different and cheaper option for those who want to come fishing or simply enjoy the nature in the valley of Puelo River.  To do this, we have decided to offer accommodation (including breakfast); a cooking service (you can bring your own food and we cook it) or you can by from us your dinner or lunch (or both).

Posada Martín Pescador is located about 2 Km from Llanada Grande, on the lakeside of Lake Totoral and has a capacity of up to 8 people.  La Posada has two rooms that can be used as singles, doubles, triples or quadruples.  If it is necessary, we can also coordinate a vehicle for you pick up on your arrival at Puerto Montt airport so you can drive directly to Puelo Valley.

Technical Description

Here we present the options we offer:

OPTION 1: Rio Puelo - Puerto Urrutia area (Llanada Grande upriver):

This is a full day option where we can provide you with a box lunch if it is required.  It runs from La Pasarela to El Porton area (about 20 km of river, board and wading at many points) with large presence of rainbow trout.

OPTION 2: Azul Lake

This excursion can be done on a half or on a full day.  This cobalt blue lake has many small tributaries that make i tan option for fishing with sinking line.  It has also some edges with reeds for dry fly fishing.

OPTION 3: Totoral Lake

This is a half day excursion where the fishing possibility is the rainbow trout.  Posada Martin Pescador is located here we offer our guests the possibility of using our boats (canoes) free of charge.

OPTION 4: Puelo River - Tagua Tagua area

This is a full day excursion and in this case we will embark on La Isla to explore different areas of this wonderfull river such us Traidor river, Santo Domingo river and Manso river.  Here there is a possibility of wading in many sectors.

The idea is that each fisherman can combine the excursions mentioned above as per the number of days he wants to stay at La Posada Martin Pescador.  In addition, these excursions must be paid directly to the local boatmen, allowing significant savings.  Our staff at La Posada M. P. will be incharge of coordinating with local suppliers so they are expecting the date and time agreed.  I have personally checked each one of our local operators and I can guarantee a secure service (lifeguard, engines, boats, communications, etc.) Also, everyone has a lot of experience in what he does.

We hope this proposal is a solution for those fishermen who want to design their own experiences paying a fair value for each of the selected services.  We also offer all the confort necessary plus an unexplored place called Llanada Grande in the Puelo Alto River.

We continue our route towards the Puelo River valley, where approaching the Andes, we enter a steep-walled valley originating in Argentina. We drive along this river to reach Lake Tagua-Tagua. Here we enjoy a delicious lunch while we await the arrival of our ferry. Loading our vehicle on the ferry we cross Lake Tagua-Tagua, and then continue along a recently opened road, built to allow access to pioneer settlements in this isolated region.  We arrive at Manso River where we will have our first fishing experience.  After three hours fishing, pick up and transfer to our lodge, Posada Martin Pescador.  Here we take time to settle in and enjoy some refreshments along with a hearty Patagonian–style meal (L, D).

Day 2

Today we will go to the Puelo river valley, to a place called Puerto Urrutia, where we board a jet-boat that will take us up the river for 45 minutes to reach La Pasarela.  In this place there is there is a suspension bridge that it is used to connect the local community with the path to Argentina.  After enjoying this beautiful ride we start the fishing day downstream (box lunch included.  In due time, return to Posada Martin Pescador, dinner and overnight.  (B, B-L, D).
